The Tutoring and Academic Skills Program offers academic skills assistance to students at UNCG, free as part of your tuition.
What can an Academic Skills specialist help me with?
Each student’s needs are different, but some common focus areas for our Academic Skills sessions include:
- Managing your time
- Listening and note-taking
- Preparing for a test
- Dealing with test anxiety or procrastination
- Being a more efficient and effective learner
NOTE: You don’t have to be in a particular course to take advantage of this service. Academic Skills can apply to any class. However, you do need to be enrolled at the university.
Getting Academic Skills Assistance
If you take advantage of our Academic Skills services, here is what you can expect:
Once your request is received, you will be sent an email about the next steps to get assigned to a specialist. Please check your email regularly, so there is no delay in getting help!
Assessing your skills
Each student develops a unique plan with the help of their academic skills specialist. To help us develop that plan, we have a diagnostic tool we can use to help you identify your academic strengths and weaknesses and to identify areas where we can be of the most help.
Developing your skills
Through a series of meetings and interactive sessions, you will have the opportunity to learn new approaches to study strategies and time management, and get advice from a trained Academic Skills specialist, who will help you navigate changes to your routines and processes. Typically, students meet weekly for four- to six- weeks, but that depends on the student and their needs.
