As part of the Student Success Center, the UNCG-McNair Scholars Program provides academic support and programming from a knowledgeable staff who engage students in maximizing their potential. As scholars develop their research interests with faculty mentors, they receive a variety of benefits and services to prepare them for graduate programs in their chosen fields of study.

Some highlights of the UNCG-McNair Experience include:

  • Enrollment in an Interdisciplinary Honors Research Methodology Course
  • An eight-week McNair Summer Research Institute
  • Interactive workshops, seminars, and colloquia
  • Opportunities to present research projects at state, regional, and national conferences (and funds to pay for travel)

SOPHOMORE YEAR

Apply & Interview to join UNCG-McNair Attend UNCG-McNair colloquia Attend UNCG-McNair workshops
Accepted applicants attend UNCG-McNair Induction Ceremony Attend UNCG-McNair workshops Visit potential graduate school programs with UNCG-McNair cohort & staff
Create a graduate school plan with the help of faculty and UNCG-McNair staff Begin to develop research interests and research questions  
Assess needs with UNCG-McNair staff    

 

JUNIOR YEAR

FALL SPRING SUMMER
If joining as a junior, same as above, plus: Enroll in Inter-Disciplinary Research Methods Course (3 credit hours) Enroll in UNCG-McNair Summer Research Institute
Identify and narrow research interests Attend graduate school fair & a research enrichment experience Compose personal statements; request faculty recommendation letters
Identify a UNCG faculty mentor Take a GRE practice test Continue GRE test preparation
  Finalize summer research/internship plans Visit potential graduate school programs with UNCG-McNair cohort & staff
  Attend UNCG-McNair colloquia, workshops, social, & cultural events Present research at McNair symposia or other research conferences

 

BY END OF SENIOR YEAR, YOU WILL HAVE

Completed and presented your research project at a regional and/or national conference
Finalized your list of graduate schools and travelled to visit your preferred schools
Completed the GRE and all of your graduate school applications
Graduated from UNCG!
